THE ART OF ASSEMBLY

October 17 – November 22, 2026

Firmament Gallery at Nimbus Arts Center,
329 Warren St, Jersey City, NJ
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 17th 7-9:00 pm

Bringing together the work of 15 New York Society of Women Artists (NYSWA) members, The Art of Assembly explores community, collective identity, artistic freedom, and the changing social landscape of our time.

Curated by independent curator Tina Maneca, the exhibition invites artists to respond to the “push and pull” of a world in flux. The selected works approach the idea of assembly both conceptually and materially, addressing themes of democracy, freedom, community, and collective identity through processes of assemblage, construction, and layering.

“The Art of Assembly boldly explores the power of artistic freedom, the evolving landscape of social interaction, and the profound political possibilities found in collective gatherings,” says Maneca. “This exhibition seeks to illuminate how art and activism converge in public spaces, especially in moments of crisis and social unrest, initiating dialogue and transformation.”

Exhibiting Artists: Carolyn Oberst, Sandra Cavanaugh, Seema Lisa Pandya, Audrey Anastasi, Joanne Steinhardt, Elizabeth De Bethune, Janet Rutkowski, Sarah Katz, Lori Horowitz, Lynne Friedman, Fran Beallor, Karen Kirshner, Natalie Giugni, Siena Gillann Porta, Susan Markowitz Meredith.

As NYSWA celebrates its 101st year, The Art of Assembly continues the organization’s longstanding commitment to creating opportunities for artistic exchange, dialogue, and connection. Presented in Jersey City’s Powerhouse Arts District, the exhibition also extends NYSWA’s presence into a new arts community as the organization moves forward into its second century.
